Two New Shows

This is the month of the photographer for ArtsUnited. Every month throughout the year the organization hosts two art shows. For the rest of the month of September both their exhibits are of works by local photographers.

At Storks in Wilton Manors (2505 NE 15th Ave.) Karen Lee Myers is showing her photography. The exhibit is open and free to the public. Although she attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1989, Karen is mostly self-taught. Her goal is finding beauty in every day simplicity when she takes photographs. Nature, still life, and landscapes as well as Buddhist statues and symbols are the favorite images that appeal to her. Myers also enjoys photographing female erotic imagery. She has previously shown her work at other ArtsUnited group shows earlier this year. Karen lives in Wilton Manors with her Welsh Corgi pup, Corkie. Her work can be purchased and viewed at her web site www.artnabox.com.

A couple of miles away Kelvin Stansberry’s work is on show at the Stonewall Library and Archives (1717 N. Andrews Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale), again until September 30. Stansberry likes to photograph landscapes, cityscapes, travel, gardens, and flowers.

“I would describe myself as a shy artist. I began photographing people and events three years ago to try and break out of my shyness,” he is quoted as saying. He credits local gay photographer Michael Murphy for mentoring him in digital photography. “Michael shared with me his invaluable insight on running a digital photography studio and I worked with him on some large assignments. He is an all around great guy and a true professional."

"I have titled my exhibit ‘From Boys Next Door to Bodybuilders.’ The boys next door depicted in this exhibit are friends who have graciously posed and consented to have their pictures displayed. “The bodybuilding photos were shot at the preliminaries of the 2006 NPC Southern States Bodybuilding Competition held in Fort Lauderdale on July 14 at the War Memorial Auditorium. Taken at face value, the bodybuilding photos are intended as a celebration of the male physique at its aesthetic best. My intent is to honor the hard work and sacrifice of these amazing athletes who have dedicated their lives to becoming living, breathing works of art.”

Kelvin’s extensive photographic collection can be viewed online at http://imagesbykelvin.com. The online collection is primarily film photography, but that is slowly changing, as he now shoots digital exclusively.
